During the Russian-Ukrainian war, hostilities in the area of the city of Kherson began from the first days of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, 24 February 2022 year.
The city hosted a series of large-scale rallies with the slogans "Kherson is Ukraine" against the Russian occupation. During the occupation, the city's residents were repressed by the occupying forces.
28 it became known in June, that the Russian occupiers started illegally issuing Russian passports in the city and region. The occupation authorities switched education in schools to the Russian language and destroyed Ukrainian books, thereby trying to destroy Ukrainian culture.
During the following months, the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out numerous strikes on ammunition depots and command posts of Russian troops in Kherson and the Kherson region.

11 November 2022 The Armed Forces of Ukraine entered the city.
The entire right-bank part of the Kherson region was liberated
Kherson was released after 256 days of occupation.
